In recognition of May as Mental Health Awareness Month, the American Farm Bureau Federation has launched a comprehensive, easy-to-use online directory of resources for farmers, ranchers and their families who are experiencing stress and mental health challenges. The Farm State of Mind Resource Directory features hundreds of mental health resources centered around farmers and rural communities. The directory is searchable by state, national, resource type and resource name. It includes hotlines, counseling services, articles, support communities, learning opportunities and more for those who need help or know someone who does. Remember, a healthy farm or ranch is nothing without a healthy you.

In early 90s I had handled a situation with a distraught farmers wife who messed up the farm’s finances and would sob. On several occasions she would say her husband would be better off without her and wanted to take her life. In those years there wasn’t support systems for farmers. I spoke with the woman sometimes daily giving her financial counseling and ways to liquidate items she didn’t need, even giving advice on how to fix their boiler. It took a good 6 months to straighten out the finances but she did it. With each call she felt more in control. Even after almost 35 years, I’ll never forget her name and our final conversation when she told me everything is on track thanks to my help and listening to her. Mental health resources are now available to farmers so take advantage of them.
Being a farmer is very difficult. Even if you grow perfect plants, the market prices change do to demand, weather, etc. they are always working. They worry about their crops and animals. They worry about money. Will they make a profit? Will it flood?rain?drought? Insect invasions. Bird invasions. The list goes on. They experience this every year. Their mental health should be a top priority. Because they are farmers, and we depend on them to eat! This is also true of all the farm workers. Support the farmers. Support the agricultural workers. They actually grow and harvest our meals. Support the United Farm Workers Union. Thank you for feeding us. ❤️
